This Section has the responsibility of enforcing fire and building codes for the purpose of protecting the citizens of Tennessee from injury or death. The state has adopted the 1997 edition of the Southern Building Code Congress International's Standard Building Code and any referenced standard in the 1997 edition of the National Fire Protection Association's (NFPA) Standard #1, Chapter 43 effective December 28, 1997. Adoption of the 1999 Standard Building Code and the 2000 NFPA Standard #1, Chapter 43, is anticipated in late 2000. This Section reviews the construction drawings and performs inspections during construction on a wide range of occupancies across the state. This Section is also responsible for reviewing the plans for L.P. Gas installations, investigating blasting complaints and fireworks licensing violations, and the licensing of fire sprinkler contractors and designers.
